The PADI Open Water Diver certification is your gateway to scuba diving independently with a certified dive buddy or a dive professional! Upon completing the course you will be allowed to dive to a maximum depth of 18m/60ft. The course typically takes 3-4 days with 5 confined water dives and 4 open water dives.
If you are not ready to do the full course you can sign up for a PADI Discover Scuba Diving program or a PADI Scuba Diver course, which will allow you to transfer the credits later to the full PADI Open Water program.

The PADI Open Water Diver will cover all the basics of scuba diving such as:
- Knowledge development sessions
- Dive equipment
- Dive procedures and techniques
- Dive planning
- Confined water skills practice
- Open water dives
Through the confined water training sessions you will learn all the necessary skills to dive in safety in shallow water. Later on you will improve on those skills and build some more advanced techniques.
You will also do 4 open water dives, where you get to apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in order to safely explore what Komodo’s water has to offer up to a maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet.
Absolutely! You can do the knowledge development sessions online at your convenience with the PADI eLearning program. So when you arrive at Somer Dive Center, all that is left for you to do is dive, dive, dive.
Allow at least 2 days for the rest of the course. weather and performance permitting. There will be a Quick Review of the eLearning program, followed by confined water sessions and 4 open water dives, throughout 2-3 days. You can find more information on the official PADI eLearning section.
Yes! Simply bring your PADI Scuba Diver paperwork and your Open Water Manual. It will take normally 1-2 days to upgrade to PADI Open Water Diver, weather and performance permitting.

All you need is good health, reasonable fitness level, and confidence in the water. Children aged 10 -1 can earn the PADI Jr Open Water Diver certification, diving to a maximum depth of 12 meters/40 feet with a PADI professional or a certified parent/guardian. Children aged 12 to 14 can also be Jr Open Water Diver certified, to a maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet with any adult certified diver.

Yes! With the PADI Open Water Referral you can complete your knowledge development and confined water sessions close to home, and do only a confined water skills review and 4 open water dives in Komodo.
